The study attempts to review the classical approaches to the verification of the convergence hypothesis based on the traditional econometric techniques. We have described two of the most popular concepts of convergence, i.e. β-convergence and σ-convergence, their origin, and interrelations. The presented critique and limitations to the use of classical tests in empirical research do not lead us to reject those methods. I he vast theoretical and empirical literature indicates that keeping an eye on the proper selection of the sample, both in time and by objects, and the proper choice оГ the estimation techniques can give us helpful insights into the analysis of the emerging and developing economies relatively far from their long-run and sustainable growth paths.pl_PL
