Hipolit Estko (1800–1857) i fabryka cukru w Tarzymiechach

Abstract

Hipolit Estko was born in 1800 in Hohołów. He graduated from Warsaw Highschool in 1819. In the same year he began Law and Administration studies at Warsaw University. Four years later, he married Feliksa from the Bełzecki family in Trzeszczany, who brought him a daughter Władysława in 1825. Before the November Insurrection started, he joined the artillery and in 1831 he was honoured with the Silver Order of Virtuti Militari for the battle of Ostrołęka. During the November Insurrection he bacame a second lieutenant. He built a sugar plant in Tarzymiechy in 1840, which was functioning till 1848. It was a small sugar factory, where he conducted experiments and produced sugar. Hipolit came from a house with great patriotic traditions. His grandmother Anna Estko was a sister of Tadeusz Kościuszko, who was the commander-in-chief of the Insurrection of 1794. His father Stanisław, in turn, was a major. Also, Hipolit’s uncle Tadeusz was a captain and Sykstus was a general. Hipolit lived in Hohołów near Sokal, Niedzieliska and Tarzymiechy in Zamość poviat and also in Łuszczów as well as in Trzeszczany in Hrubieszów poviat. His daughter Władysława married Maurycy Załuski in 1850. She bacame an owner of Tarzymiechy and Trzeszczany, which belonged to Hipolit’s wife Feliksa. He died in Trzeszczany, 13 January 1857.
