In teaching hotel trade the ability of using, calculating and interpreting different kinds of measures plays a vital role, although it is sometimes underestimated .The authors present in an orderly way the basic and most commonly used measures in teaching hotel trade, at the same time classifying them into three groups:
– hotel parameters (so called basic measures),
– activity indicators ( related to the hotel activity),
– factors (highlighting chosen features used with a chosen indicator).
The paper discusses parameters and indicators according to the uniform scheme. Each quantity has been defined, expressed in mathematical formula and presented as an example indicating its practical use. Within parameters seven notions have been described: the size of a hotel, service potential of a hotel, accommodation, overnight stay with full board, number of lodgings, nominal number of lodgings and capabilities of rendering hotel services. Indicators for teaching purposes have been put into three groups i.e. operation indicators concerned with the use of the hotel or its section and hotel employment, economic indicators and finally geographical and tourist function indicators.
Totally 27 different measures used in hotel activity have been discussed in the present paper. Three analytical methods used for analysing operational data i.e. horizontal, vertical and indicating have been included in the summary of the paper. The use of each of them is related to the range of research, the degree at which available information and indicators have been used, but also to standard, location, function and individual decisions made by employees of a hotel or a corporation.
