| dc.description | This dataset consists of two in-depth interviews with prominent Argentine writers of Jewish descent: Martín Kohan and Saúl Sosnowski. Conducted in Buenos Aires in March 2025 by the research team of the project Multidirectional Memory in Latin American Jewish Literature since the 1990s, the conversations explore the complexities of Jewish identity in contemporary Argentina, addressing questions of cultural heritage, religious upbringing, political positioning, and the impact of historical trauma such as the Holocaust and the Argentine dictatorship.
In Kohan’s interview, identity emerges as a dynamic and conflictual process rather than a fixed essence. He reflects on his early Jewish education, his rejection of religious formalism, and the persistent questioning of what it means to “be Jewish.” The discussion touches on themes such as the tension between assimilation and tradition, the role of antisemitism in shaping identity, and the influence of cultural markers like klezmer music and humor. Kohan also examines how Jewishness intersects with his literary practice, political ideology, and experiences of hostility in the current global context.
The interview with Sosnowski (included in the dataset) complements these reflections by offering another perspective on Jewish identity, memory, and intellectual engagement within Latin American cultural and political frameworks.
Together, these interviews provide rich qualitative material for research on identity construction, diaspora, memory politics, and the interplay between personal narratives and collective history. | pl_PL |
| dc.description.abstract | This dataset comprises two semi-structured interviews with renowned Argentine writers of Jewish descent: Martín Kohan and Saúl Sosnowski. The conversations delve into the multifaceted nature of Jewish identity in Latin America, exploring its cultural, political, and historical dimensions. Kohan reflects on his early religious education, his rejection of formal religiosity, and the persistent questioning of what it means to “be Jewish,” framing identity as a dynamic process marked by tension and self-interrogation. He addresses issues such as assimilation versus tradition, the role of antisemitism in shaping identity, and cultural markers like klezmer music and humor. The interview also examines intersections between Jewishness, literary practice, and political ideology, alongside experiences of hostility in contemporary contexts. Sosnowski’s perspective complements these reflections by situating Jewish identity within broader debates on memory, diaspora, and intellectual engagement in Latin American cultural and political frameworks. Together, these interviews offer rich qualitative material for research on identity construction, memory politics, and the interplay between personal narratives and collective history. | pl_PL |
