The aim of the article is to identify the latest research opportunities in genre studies and to select the appropriate tools for further studies on hybrid genres, which include especially graphic novels. The first part of the paper is focused on a term 'literary', which has been changing over last decades. Poststructural, anthropological and cultural theory of literature approaches expand the meaning of this concept and open it for such (non)literary genres as graphic novel/graphic novels and other hybrid texts. Next I show the sketch of comics history and its correspondence with literature. The third part of paper, in particular, puts the graphic novel issue into the context of methodological impasse in essential genre studies and the blur of literary categories. That final passage presents some ol the newest theoretical approaches in polish genre studies (e.g. prototype theory) as the way to study hybrid genres.pl_PL
