Abstract

The aim of the article is to present the principles of the system of pensions for invalids in Poland and the material situation of their households. This provided a basis for formulation of conclusions concerning the level of incomes obtained by this population group. The material situation of invalids was discussed on the basis of the level of invalids ’ pensions in the years 1980-1987; pensions and average nominal wages; nominal incomes of retirees ’ and invalids ’ households and households of professionally active persons; costs of living and real incomes; share of food expenditure in these households in their entire expenditure; and the level of incomes obtained by households of invalids which were studied in Łodź in 1987.The results of the performed analysis point at substantial differences in the level of incomes obtained by households of invalids and professionally active persons, and at poverty of a considerable part of invalids ’ households, which necessitates launching remedial measures. The conclusions formulated in the article concern the principles of fixing pensions and new solutions in the field of fixing invalids’ incomes with a special emphasis laid on creating favourable conditions for their work.
