Studenci nie kończący studiów. Aspiracje, losy życiowe i zawodowe
Abstract
The book presents an analysis of the life and occupational carreers
of drop-out students who left the University before graduation
and thereby it deals with main-line problems of student selection
both in the course of studies and in the case of dropping out.
The studied category is a product of the internal selection
which takes place at the University and which i3 referred to as
"waste" or "offal". The population under study conisted of students of industial economy
at the University of Łódź who dropped-out before graduation
in all years of studies (i.e. from the 1st to 5th year) in the course
of seven consecutive accademic years (1969/70 to 1975/76). The basic
research material consisted of interviews obtained from 258 persons.
The main objective of the study was to categorize the material.
A comparison of the needs and aspirations connected with university
education from the period- of studies and the period after leaving
the University yielded the following typology comprising 4 categories;
1. Those whose ungratified’needs and aspirations did not change
but became a source of frustration and dissatisfaction with their
present situation; 2. Those whose needs and aspirations dwindled and who adapted
to the situation (resignation).
3. Those whose needs and aspirations connected with university
education were so strong that they had to be realized in the form
of part time or extramural studies or by challenging once more the
selectional barrier; 4. Those whose aspirations underwent some modification in the
course of adaptation to the new situation (eg. those whose theoretical
angle changed to a more practical, occupational bias).
