Hymn Ariona do Posejdona

Abstract

The author presents Arion of Methymna and takes under consideration (basing on ancient authorities) the question whether the poet was a real figure or mythological. The article mentions the discussion on the matter of the poem’s character, its authorship as well as metrical problems. Finally, the author’s concurrance with Gaudius Aelian’s opinion takes place that the discussed poem is a hymn of thanks dedicated to Poseidon the god of sea. Arion is recognized as the poem’s author and its first reciter.
