In this article, the author points at differentiation of scale, scope and directions of response of households to the economic crisis of the eighties. The source of information are questionnaire surveys carried out in two towns of different size. The surveys allow to state that the main prerequisite of changes in consultation patterns is rather a subjective perception of a threat carried for the household's material situation by the crisis than its real impact on it. These changes can be seen both in search for additional sources of financing expenses, different ways of allocating Incomes, and In transformations in organization of consumption itself. Relatively the biggest differences in behaviours can be observed in a cross- -section of three characteristics: educational background of the household head, Incomes, and size of town in which a given family lives.
