Microtoponimi e macrotoponimi nell’antichità

Abstract

Classification of place names following the modern terminology “microtoponymy” and “macrotoponymy” is put in question for both formal and substantial reasons. Such a distinction as well as a general term for ‘place name’ is unknown to Greek and Latin terminology, which shows different approaches to this issue. Latin terms for settlements are partially continued in place names of Western Europe as a consequence of the organization of the Roman world with respect to road network and rural communities.
