Forming a uniform mining terminology independent of the type of the mine
has been observed for many years but local differentiations in this field
are still quite considerable. When comparing the mining vocabulary used by
the miners in ore-mines in southern part of Częstochowa region with the mining
vocabulary used in Silesian coal-mines it may be noticed that only 25
out of about 300 registered names function symultaneously in both regions
and they do not have any synonyms. These are old, native names of places
with Slavonic'stems and names of tools used both in the mines and at home.
Other terms generally have many synonyms in one of the regions. There is a
big group of names mentioned only in one of the regions, while in the other
region either there function different definitions for a certain designation
or there is no designation at all (it is possible due to different methods
of research). Out of 288 registered names, 105 names were known only in
Częstochowa region, 106 names - only in Silesia, and 77 names appeared in
both regions. The vocabulary concerning names of places and names of tools
was the richest. There prevailed native names which constituted 180 entries.
Most often terms defining people working in the mines and tools were different.
Borrowings in the field of tools appeared more often in Częstochowa
region where there were more primitive methods of work and so simpler tools
were used: the borrowings were either very old or they functioned together
with native names - very seldom were they the only definitions of the designation.
On the other hand in Silesia mainly names of people were borrowed
what was connected with a greater differentiation of work posts in big coal-
-minęs.
