L’incertitude comme thème et complexe chez Montale, homme et poète

Abstract

This study aims to highlight the prevalence of uncertainty as a psychological ‘complex’ and as a poetic theme in the work of Eugenio Montale (1896-1981). The starting point of this work is the analysis of 156 letters (first published in 2006) that Montale wrote to his most important muse, the American Irma Brandeis, between 1933 and 1939. Analyzing these letters reveals the intensity of a romantic torment generated by the poet’s obsessive uncertainties concerning the woman he loves, who asks him to join her in the United States. Given the role that Irma’s figure will play in Montale’s creative process, it seems important to understand whether, and how, Montale’s poetry accommodates these heart-wrenching uncertainties. In this perspective, an analysis of the late poem L’imponderabile (1971), in light of the correspondence with the young American, suggests a new interpretation of the text. More broadly, analyzing Montale’s poetry prior to his meeting with Irma allows us to establish the prominence of the theme of uncertainty in Montale’s work, showing that this uncertainty is not only cognitive and philosophical but also has a psychological and existential dimension that is constitutive of his poetic world, beginning with his early poems.

Cette étude entend mettre au jour la prégnance de l’incertitude comme ‘complexe’ psychologique et comme thème poétique dans l’oeuvre d’Eugenio Montale (1896-1981). Le point de départ de ce travail est l’analyse des 156 lettres (publiées pour la première fois en 2006) que Montale a écrites à sa muse la plus importante, l’américaine Irma Brandeis, entre 1933 et 1939. Leur analyse fait ressortir l’intensité d’un tourment amoureux généré par les incertitudes maladives du poète face à la femme aimée qui lui demande de la rejoindre aux États-Unis. Compte tenu du rôle que jouera la figure d’Irma dans la création montalienne, il paraît important de comprendre si, et comment, la poésie de Montale fait une place à ces incertitudes déchirantes. Dans cette perspective, l’analyse du poème tardif L’imponderabile (1971) en regard de la correspondance avec la jeune américaine suggère une nouvelle lecture de ce texte. Plus largement, l’analyse de la poésie montalienne antérieure à la rencontre avec Irma permet d’établir la prégnance du thème de l’incertitude dans l’oeuvre de Montale, en montrant que cette incertitude n’est pas seulement d’ordre cognitif et philosophique mais qu’elle revêt une dimension proprement psychologique et existentielle constitutive de son monde poétique, dès les poèmes de jeunesse.
