Streszczenie
This article shows the history of education from XIX century through to modern times within the United Kingdom. The majority of schools that existed in XIX century were run by the church; the curriculum was bias heavily towards religious education where physical education was not featured within the curriculum. There also existed secular schools in XIX century well physical education was featured within the curriculum, but no great importance was attached to physical education within the secular schools. As playgrounds was not incorporated into church schools or the secular schools buildings, the only way that pupils could develop their sport skills where via access to the public parks within the cities or on common land in the country sides. During the XX century the educational system became aware of the importance sport within the school curriculum.
Nowadays the British society is paying greater attention to sporting activity and sport within the United Kingdom compared to the past, as sport is recognised to have an important role within British culture. The most popular sport in modern British society is: - Football, Rugby, Cricket and Tennis. Political responsibility for sport in England & Wales lies with the UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport, for Scotland the political responsibility lies with Scottish Government Minister for Communities and Sport. Sport is compulsory on the school curriculum for all students up to the age of sixteen; the minimum amount of time devoted to physical education is 90 minutes per week.
In 2002 the “The national PE, School Sport and Club Links” strategy was launch by the Prime Minister. The government in partnership with the National Lottery have committed 1,5 billion pounds to this strategy over 5 years. The aim was to enhance the take-up of sporting opportunities by 5 to 16-year-olds, the ambitious target was to increase the percentage of schoolchildren who spend a minimum of two hours a week on high-quality Physical Education and school sport within and beyond the standard curriculum requirements.
