Abstract
The presented paper is devoted to selected issues related to developing external
innovation capacity of small and medium-sized enterprises and the role of environmental
factors in this process. In its first part, the paper presents the concept and types of
innovation capacity of enterprises. The second part concentrates on selected issues
connected with specific characteristics that shape external innovation capacity, in particular:
types of environment in which innovative companies operate and their impact
on innovation capacity of these enterprises, as well as the role of institutional partners
in innovation capacity of enterprises. These elements may have a diverse impact on the
outcome of innovation, particularly when studied in isolation or in various parts of organisation
without taking into account the existing synergistic relations.
