The official world was governed by its own internal rules. In the Russian Empire, all civil and military officials were bound by a unified system of state service covered by a 14-level table of ranks. The result of such a policy of power was, among other things, the pressure of promotion and the pursuit of further actions. One of the privileges of belonging to the civil service was to wear a uniform appropriate to the place of work. It was an essential element in the overall image of the 19th century official. The aim of the article will be to reflect on the aspect of man’s attachment to the uniform, his importance in the deed environment – sometimes an obsessive desire to have it, and sometimes treating it as a troublesome excess, because its maintenance was not always possible, especially for a group of poorer administrative workers. The source base for the analysis of the issue is, besides legal acts and memuars, 19th century Russian literature, which perfectly reflects the „climate” of the bureaucratic world of Tsarist Russia.en
