dc.description | Ryszard Kilvington (około 1302–1361) świadomie i z satysfakcją wychodził poza ustalone w jego czasach ramy postępowania naukowego. Po uzyskaniu doktoratu z teologii, czyli najwyższego wówczas stopnia wykształcenia uniwersyteckiego, Kilvington porzucił naukę na rzecz kariery politycznej i kościelnej. Mimo to, jego wkład w rozwój czternastowiecznej filozofii przyrody był tak znaczący, że uznawany jest współcześnie, wraz z Tomaszem Bradwardinem, za założyciela tzw. Szkoły Oksfordzkich Kalkulatorów. Szkoła ta znana jest dzięki wprowadzeniu metod matematycznych do, z ducha Arystotelesowskiej, filozofii scholastycznej.
Tematem książki jest wkład Ryszarda Kilvingtona w toczący się na Uniwersytecie Oksfordzkim w początkach XIV w. spór o istnienie niepodzielnych, nieskończenie małych atomów tworzących całość rzeczywistości przyrodniczej. Debata dotycząca struktury kontinuum stała się dla Kilvingtona okazją do analizy takich problemów, jak: kwestia adekwatności praw matematycznych do praw przyrody, różnego rozumienia takich samych, wydawałoby się podstawowych i oczywistych, terminów i pojęć w dziedzinie geometrii oraz filozofii przyrody czy też istnienia wielkości i mnogości nieskończonych. Zaproponowane przez Kilvingtona rozwiązanie tego ostatniego problemu jest zaskakująco bliskie rozwiązaniu przyjętemu we współczesnej matematyce. Książka jest adresowana nie tylko do czytelników książek z zakresu historii filozofii średniowiecznej, matematyków i fizyków, ale do wszystkich tych, którzy chcieliby poznać ścieżki rozwoju nauki przednowożytnej. | pl_PL |
