Streszczenie
One way of tackling the difficult situation in the labour marketsin EU Member States which leads to persistently high unemployment, particularly among young people, is the wider use of flexible forms of employment, such as temporary work which is mainly offered by temporary employment agencies (TEA). As any short-term relationship between the employee and the employer characterised by high variability of
working and employment conditions, temporary work encourages a comparison of its advantages and disadvantages, benefits and limitations. The survey undertaken by the staff and doctoral students at the Chair of Labour and Social Policy aimed to answer the question about who and how benefitted from temporary employment – temporary workers, TEAs or employers for whom the former ultimately work? Another aim was to identify how temporary employment influences the expectations and aspirations of temporary workers regarding their future careers and to establish whether it enhances the portfolio of competencies of the people who have done temporary jobsand thereby increases their employability in the long term. The survey, which was conducted in Łódź in the first half of 2013,covered the selected
TEAs, employers, temporary workers and students, as well as the front line managers who directly manage temporary workers in companies. As shown by the survey’s results, temporary employment offers measurable short-term and long term benefits, as it protects against unemployment and increases the
chances of getting a steady job. Hence it is chosen by young people starting into a career and older people who want to wait safely for their retirement to come.
