Abstract

The paper presents selected determinants of innovativeness of enterprises from the SME sector operating in the areas of high technologies in Poland, including biotechnology. In particular, the correlations existing between the innovation capacity, state aid and innovation were analysed. The paper also discusses the impact of innovation on competitiveness and employment growth. The study conducted among 48 high-tech enterprises from the SME sector in Poland indicates a significant role of the innovation capacity in the development of innovativeness of enterprises, whereas state aid without a developed innovation capacity is a rather ineffective innovation instrument. The study shows that innovation visibly improves competitiveness of enterprises and only to a small extent affects job creation
