Abstract

Szkocka tożsamość narodowa jest nie tylko mało znana, ale także mało badana. Szkotów traktuje się często jak Brytyjczyków i nie dostrzega ich odrębności. Referendum w sprawie niepodległości regionu było dla wielu zaskoczeniem, nie tylko dlatego, że nikt nie spodziewał się przeprowadzenia go tak szybko i sprawnie, ale również z powodu jego wyniku. Podkreślający swoją odrębność od Brytyjczyków, a w szczególności nielubianych Anglików, Szkoci nie byli gotowi na odłączenie. Artykuł skupia się na omówieniu tożsamości narodowej Szkotów, a autorka pokazuje, jakie czynniki zdeterminowały organizację referendum niepodległościowego oraz dlaczego ostatecznie na postawione w nim pytanie Szkoci odpowiedzieli „nie”.

Scottish national identity is both unknown and little studied. Scots are treated as Britons and no one seems to notice their distinctiveness from them. Scots’ referendum was a surprise to many, not only because it was well organized, but also because of its result. Even though the Scots use to emphasize their distinctiveness from the Britons, especially from the disliked Englishmen, they were not ready to become an independent nation. The article focuses on discussing the Scots’ national identity and the author shows what factors determined the organization of the referendum and why the Scots answered „no” to the question posed.
