The book presents a multi-disciplinary study concerning linguistic genology, which also draws from media studies, sociology of sport, and anthropology. The notion of genre is central to the presented analysis, which is mostly based on television broadcast and supplemented with some remarks on radio and internet broadcasts. The methodology used is mainly Maria Wojtak’s methodology of linguistic genology, pragmalinguistics and stylistics. On the basis of 100 broadcasts the author constructed a genre pattern of the television sports broadcast. She considers it to be heterogenous, incorporating features of many other genres. She concludes that the analyzed genre does not have a homogenous canonic genre pattern, but rather – is a collection of genres. The first chapter is devoted to the theory of genre – the author presents literary, linguistic, and media genology, and in particular concentrates on a television genre. The second chapter concerns media discourse, especially television discourse, as well as the language of television. The third chapter presents the genre pattern, which consists of the television conversation and the proper live coverage with a commentary, accompanied by other genres (interview, conference). The fourth chapter characterizes the communicative act of the television football game broadcast, through the description of the sender, the receiver, and the communicative situation. The fifth chapter presents the basic genres a sport broadcast consists of and the collection of accompanying genres. The sixth chapter concerns the comparative analysis of broadcasts in various television channels and the seventh chapter compares the broadcasts of the same football game presented in various media – television, radio and on the Internet.
