Adolf Butenandt - Doktor Honoris Causa der Technischen Hochschule Danzig - Sein Leben und Werk

Abstract

Adolf Butenandt (1903-1995), der berühmte Chemiker und Nobelpreisträger, hat entscheidende Jahre seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn von 1933 bis 1936 als Professor tlir Chemie an der Technischen Hochschule in Danzig verbracht. In der Danziger Zeit gelangen ihm und seiner Arbeitsgruppe die Isolierung und Strukturaufklärung der Steroidhormone Östron, Testosteron, Progesteron und Androsteron. Für diese Ergebnisse wurde Butenandt, inzwischen Direktor des Kaiser-Wilhelm-Instituts für Biochemie in Berlin, 1939 mit dem Nobelpreis für Chemie ausgezeichnet. Butenandt hat seine Danziger Zeit als die schönste in seinem Leben bezeichnet. Erst 42 Jahre später, 1978, ergab sich eine Gelegenheit, Danzig wiederzusehen. 1994 erhielt er von der Technischen Hochschule Danzig (Politechnika Gdańska) den Titel Doktor honoris causa.

Professor Adolf Butenandt (1903-1995), the famous chemist and winner of the Nobel prize, passed the decisive years of his scientific career from 1933 to 1936 as professor for chemistry at the Institute of Chemistry of the Technical University at Danzig (Politechnika Gdańska). During this time Adolf Butenandt and his research group succeeded in Isolating and elucidating the structure of steroid hormones like Estron, Testosteron, Progesteron and Androsteron. For these contributions Butenandt, meanwhile director of the Institute of Biochemistry in Berlin (Kalser- -Wilhelm-Institut filr Biochemie), was honoured with the Nobel prize in 1939. Butenandt called his time in Danzig the most wonderful time of his life. Not until 42 years later, 1978, he got the chance to visit Gdańsk again. In 1994 he got the title Doctor honoris causa of the Technical University of Gdansk (Danzig).
