Genre pattern and specialized translation (analysis of selected mechanisms
of language simplification in Polish and Italian versions
of patient information leaflet)
The patient information leaflet is a specialized text of codified character. Its genre pattern,
as defined in legal norms, includes all the genre-pattern aspects specified by Maria
Wojtak, i.e. structural, cognitive (thematic), pragmatic and stylistic. Within the stylistic
component it is possible to distinguish different language and stylistic devices the aim
of which is to facilitate the reader’s understanding of the text. The article focuses on
the analysis of one of these mechanisms, namely metatextual annotations in the form
of parenthesis (inclusion) provided in Polish and Italian, and intended to facilitate
(the reader’s) understanding of the text with regard to specialized terminology. Carrying
out the comparison resulted in doubts whether numerous metatextual parenthetic
annotations really fulfill their function.

Terminological lexis in ‘Vilnius Dictionary’ and handwritten lecture notes
on agronomy from the mid-19th century.
The plot of the article is conditioned by one of the basic issues in the field of philosophy
of history, namely the question: to what extent a given dictionary, meeting the scientific
requirements of the time of its origin, documents the complete state of lexis of a certain
period. The detailed purpose of the article is to show similarities and differences between
the ways in which notions and terms are registered and denoted in the lectures delivered
in the Agronomic Institute of Marymont in the period of 1848-1850 and in Vilnius Dictionary,
written only a bit later. Textual analysis has shown that this most thorough dictionary
of its time could not, for number of reasons, document the actual state of terminological
lexis. That observation has led to conclusion that the opinions on the state of terminological
lexis which were expressed only on the basis of dictionaries had been formed much
more carefully than it can be sometimes observed. These opinions are revised when the
examples of language usage (specific texts) are taken into consideration.

The Influence of British Regional Dialects on Standard English
This paper is a short summary of the study of British accents and dialects over the last
fifty years. The British achievements in this field are comparable to those in the United
States. The aim of this article is also to present the Polish reader with differences that
occur between local dialects and Standard English of the United Kingdom. I would also
like to estimate the current state of research within dialects in the UK. The English language
is all rich in slang words and phrases. This can be especially seen when analyzing
everyday language of the average Londoner. Although England is a comparatively small
country, the amount of dialects and regional variations is undoubtedly very diverse in the
English-speaking world.

„Bitwa o każdy grób”. Semantic, syntactic & functional analysis of the titles
in the guidebook Przewodnik po powstańczej Warszawie
The aim of this article is the presentation of the titles functions such as informative, compositional
and ideational in the guidebook of the Warsaw Uprising 1944. The authors of the
book tell about the places, but they present also participants and witnesses of the Warsaw
Uprising. The semantic and syntactic analyses of the nominalizations, which served as the
titles in this book are presented. The purpose of this section is to demonstrate relations
between the syntactical shape of particular title and the content of the given text. The article
shows the connection between shape of semantic structure and the informative power of
the particular text. The article brings also formal classification of the analyzed titles. Some
of them consist of nominalizations (18%), some perform as the sentences (5%), as phrases
with participles (9%), as phrases with infinitives (1%). In the conclusions I claim, that the
formal choices in the titles are suitable for modern reader, which is capable of perceiving
the news from the new media, such as Internet.
