The Cistercian monastery in Jemielnica, a branch of the monastery in Rudy (near
Racibórz), was founded in the 80-ies and 90-ies of the 13th century and functioned until the
beginning of the 19th century.
Presently the post-Cistercian complex including the cloister itself and the remainings of
the masonry claustrum serve the needs of the local Roman Catholic parish.
The results of the research have confirmed that the erecting of the gothic church was
initiated by building the polygnonally closed, buttressed presbiterium. In the second stage the
vessels forming the gothic body were raised. In the 18th century, during the second building
phase, the already existing sanctuary was extended towards the west and supplied with the
turret body.
Due to poor economic potential of the monastery the buildings had remained wooden
until the 18th century. This year research has excluded the presence of earlier mansonry claustrum.
Architectural observations indicating clear dissimilarity of the western wing suggest that
since the very beginning the building had been planned as an abbey palace.
The southern wing and the unsurvived eastern wing were used by the monks.
In the southern wing body no evident transformations have been noticed, whereas there
is evidence that the eastern wing, of which secondarily cloister has survived, was taken down
in the 18th century.
In the course of research the width of the eastern wing was defined (as 7,5 m) and
a square northern chamber was identified as a capitulary.
Similarly to other Cistercian buildings the complex under research has not shown traces
of presence of occupation layers connected with medieval stages of its exploitation.
It indicates that the complex was cleared. The relics occure outside the abbey ground.
The researches in 1996, despite limited range of ground works, have led to crucial
enrichment of our knowledge about the architectural transformations in Jemielnica complex
and let objectify so far controversial opinions of the historians. They have also enabled
broader evaluation of the architectural transformations observed in Rudy Abbey.

Kołodziejski, Stanisław
Amont medieval feudal elite living in Little Poland the family of Półkozice held an
important position in political and economic sphere. Unfortunately, historians have rather
underrated their role and not worked up comprehensive historical records. The present article
contributes slightly to the illustration of the effects of the Półkozice economic activities, which
are evident in defensive foundations raised in the centres of estates.
As historical researches proved, the earliest complex of properties were gathered by the
family on the Raba near Niegowicia. Relics of the first fortified endowement were found in
Chrostowa at the estuary of the Stradomka river to the Raba. Archaeological findings and
analysis of written records enable us to assume that it was most probably founded in the
end of the 13th century and fell into decline in the beginning of the 16th century. When the
castle in Chrostowa diminished the Półkozice presumably erected a new defensive fortification
in nearby Niewiarów. Yet, archaeologists have been unable to locate its remnants. The
document from 1552 is the only source of information about this residential-economic complex.
Another castle of the Półkozice family in Bobrek was not archaeologically examined
either. The first record of a defensive site functioning there comes from the document from
1395, which mentions castrum in Bobrek. For over a few centures the residence was
a possession of the Ligenza family bearing the Półkozic sign.
The relics of another castle erected by the Półkozice lie in Wrocimowice. Either in here
archaeological excavations have not been carried out. The results of reconnaissances and
studying medieval documents make us possible assume that the fortification was built in the
14th century and decreased most likely in the 16th century.
Archaeological researches embraced two other settlements of the Półkozice. The first was
raised in the 14th century on the hill in Wielka Wieś, on the left bank of the Dunajec. The
other defensive residence is assumed о have been founded in the 14th century as well in
Brzezówka at the mouth of the Jasiołka to the Wisłoka river.
At around that time, i.e. about half of the 14th century, the family constructed the castle
in Będziemyśl near Rzeszów. Its relics have been recently assessed by excavatory methods.
The foundation in Czyżów Szlachecki on the left bank of the Vistula is the foremost
northern castle. Written records date back its raising to the beginning of the 15th century.
The characterized foundations of the most eminent members of the Półkozice mentioned
in this article need further archaeological researches. Historians-medievalists should thoroughly
elaborate on their history as well.

Three graves with weapon (3, 13, 18) at the Przeworsk culture cemetery in Kompina, site
12 are the subject of this article.
The graves are furnished with military elements such as swords, spearheads, elements of
shield and some other things, e.g. earthenware. The graves nos 13 and 18 are dated to the
phase B2 (1st horizon of graves with weapon) whereas grave 3 to the phase C2 (3rd horizon
of graves with weapon). The grave no 13 is connected with beginning of the transitional
phase B2/C1 (la horizon of graves with weapon).
The first of two graves belong to the group 4 (Hadrian’s and Antoninus Pius’ time) while
the latter to the group 7 (dated from the decline of the 1st half of the 3rd to the 1st decades
of the 4th century) in new chronological system of graves with weapon (K. Godłowski 1992,
1994).
The purpose for this paper is to assess new comparative materials for researchers-arm
specialists.
