In teaching hotel trade the ability of using, calculating and interpreting different kinds of measures plays a vital role, although it is sometimes underestimated .The authors present in an orderly way the basic and most commonly used measures in teaching hotel trade, at the same time classifying them into three groups:
– hotel parameters (so called basic measures),
– activity indicators ( related to the hotel activity),
– factors (highlighting chosen features used with a chosen indicator).
The paper discusses parameters and indicators according to the uniform scheme. Each quantity has been defined, expressed in mathematical formula and presented as an example indicating its practical use. Within parameters seven notions have been described: the size of a hotel, service potential of a hotel, accommodation, overnight stay with full board, number of lodgings, nominal number of lodgings and capabilities of rendering hotel services. Indicators for teaching purposes have been put into three groups i.e. operation indicators concerned with the use of the hotel or its section and hotel employment, economic indicators and finally geographical and tourist function indicators.
Totally 27 different measures used in hotel activity have been discussed in the present paper. Three analytical methods used for analysing operational data i.e. horizontal, vertical and indicating have been included in the summary of the paper. The use of each of them is related to the range of research, the degree at which available information and indicators have been used, but also to standard, location, function and individual decisions made by employees of a hotel or a corporation.

Słupsk is an important centre in the area of Polish seaside. The town plays a vital role as a transit centre for tourists coming on holiday to the Bałtyk seaside resorts such as: Ustka, Rowy, Orzechowo, Poddąbie, Jarosławiec constituting, at the same time, a bigger service base for the resorts mentioned above.
On the other hand, the town boasts several tourist attractions, which properly promoted can generate direct visits to Słupsk of both independent and group tourists as well .So the accommodation sector of Słupsk is of vital importance – its condition, standard and supply of lodging and ancillary services. It is also vital how the existing receiving potentials of Słupsk hotels are used nowadays and whether there are any reserves. Eight accommodation centres including seven hotels (Atena, Mikołajek, Piast, Rowokół, Słupsk, Staromiejski, Zamkowy) and one motel (Przymorze) operate on the premises of the town.
Słupsk hotels are rather small. The biggest amount of rooms have Słupsk (310), Staromiejski (77) and Zamkowy hotels (66).
Słupsk hotels are of various standards. Majority of them is equipped with rooms with sanitary facilities, satellite TV, telephone and radio. They are considered to be of middle standard. Piast and Zamkowy hotels are of highest category (three stars), the remaining are two-star hotels apart from Mikołajek hotel which is one-star.
Occupancy rate in Słupsk hotels was fairly different. The highest differentiation of occupancy rate was observed in Staromiejski hotel where the turnout of guests ranged from 16% in January to 95% in May, June and July. In other hotels the occupancy rates were even lower ranging from 30% in winter months to 50% in July and August. Atena hotel has the lowest turnover rates (occupancy rate in January – 3.7%, February – 8.5%, March – 8.4%) reaching in August its maximum rate 27%.
To conclude one may say that there are still large reserves in hotel sector in Słupsk so it is advisable to continue activities attracting tourists to visit Słupsk both in high and low seasons.
