The article discusses “The Encyclopedia of the Ghetto”. Created in 1944 in the Łódź ghetto, it is the only text of this kind in the literature of the Holocaust. Its authors were inmates of the Łódź ghetto, hailing from both the city, as well as from the so-called “Old Reich”. They decided to describe the whole community along with its characteristic vocabulary in a form of an encyclopedia. Referring to the introduction by Oskar Rosenfeld dated December 1943, the article presents the idea behind the encyclopedia, its objectives, and its key assumptions. It discusses the structure and construction of entries. Examples have been provided of entries referring to various areas of the ghetto life, with certain entries notably missing from the text, the possible causes of which have been addressed in the article.

Herman Stehr (1864–1940) belonged to the generation of writers who had the chance to establish a serious opposition against National Socialism during the Weimar Republic, the Fascist movement and the Third Reich. Not only their age but also their experience predestined them to assume such an honourable position. Hermann Stehr, at the early stage of his career, was considered a modern writer, not only because of his writings but also because of his political views, when in the 1920s he took an active part in the building of democratic structures of the Weimer Republic. Around 1930/31 a change occurred his work and in his political views. From this time onwards he actively supported the Nazis and legitimized their politics in his writings both nationally and internationally. The symbiosis between him and the Nazis became more and more visible as they started promoting him as one of the leading German writers. The aim of this paper is to present one of the most renowned German authors of the first half of the 20th century, who due to his conformism during the Third Reich lost his chance to defend humanistic values.Consequently, this paper proves that it is a grave error to classify Stehr, a writers of conservative views, as part of Inner Emigration.Hermann Stehr most certainly did not belong to that group.

The main focus of this article is an analysis of one of Kurt Lück’s most extensive works – Mythos vom Deutschen in der polnischen Volksüberlieferung und Literatur – published in 1938. The article attempts to answer the question of the status of Lück’s large work of research into the “German East” in the 1930s, and the question of how the work was evaluated by German and Polish historians, ethnologists, and literary critics. The book was also presented in the context of the anti-Polish attitude of the author, whose activities and publications were strongly influenced by National Socialism.

The writers of the German Democratic Republic often reached for myths to convey forbidden issues in an oblique way and to deceive the censors. In an interview Heiner Müller admits that this was an attempt to raise crucial questions about socialism:I want neither to write ancient plays today nor to adapt ancient topics. In the early 1960s plays about Stalinism were forbidden. It was necessary to invent such a model to raise really important issues. So that people would recognize them at once.On the basis of the works Philoctetes and The Horatian the reception of two ancient myths will be followed in plays by Heiner Müller. The German playwright employs an interesting strategy: he adopts myths in varied, condensed forms, however, the plot is set in mythical circumstances.Müller does not make an attempt to modernize his dramas by transferring their content into a new setting of space and time, but he draws parallels between past and present. Müller’s plays are in Norbert Otto Eke’s opinion, both historical and contemporary. Interestingly, according to Brecht’s idea and his „alienation effect” the spectator should not identify with the events on stage, but only follow and analyse them. For this reason, the works by Müller can be qualified as didactic.
