Observation data are presented in contingency tables, and their significance tested with the χ² test. Results obtained testify to the dependence of the numbers of dead and alive cells first of all on season, and also on water temperature.

Wpływ suszy na komórki niektórych gatunków desmidii Lesiak, Teresa In July 1982 desmids cells enclosed in mucilaginous sheaths were recorded during drought in the Bagno Przerębiec transitional peatbog. They were the specimens of Cosmarium contraetum Kirch., Cosmoastrum punctulatum (Breb.) Pal.-Mordv. var. kjellmanii (Wille) Pal.-Mordv., Desmidium cylindricum Grev., Desmidium swartzii (Ag.) Ag. ex Ralfs and Raphidiastrum avicola (Breb.) Pal.-Mordv. Besides, in certain cells a change in the colour of chloroform from dark green to olive or yellow-green and numerous oleaginous granules were observed. It may be presumed that the cells of the above mentioned algae are capable of surviving drought due to their ability to produce mucilaginous sheaths and areolas, which protect them from drying.

Uwagi o taksonomii i ekologii niektórych gatunków okrzemek z rodzaju Navicula Bory Rakowska, Barbara The work contains some remarks on the taxonomy and ecology of the 23 diatom taxons from the genus Navicula Bory to be found in the microbenthos of 3 rivers of Central Poland: Bzura, Mroga and Rawka. The data concerning diatom dimensions as well as the number of striae per 10 µm have been compared with those given by Hustedt (1930), Cleve-Euler (1953), Patrick, Reimer (1966), Germain (1981) and Kramer, Lange-Bertalot (1986).

Observations were conducted using a light and an electron scanning microscope, paying particular attention to the sculpture of the cell wall of the investigated algae.
