Krzywda bez szkody (1726) Karola Piotra Sawickiego. Rekonesans
Streszczenie
The main focus of this study is to present the work of a little-known author Karol Piotr Sawicki SJ (1661–1733) and to place his collection in the context of late Baroque emblematics. The Jesuit is the author of an emblematic cycle entitled Krzywda bez szkody (1726), which is an extensive series of emblems, written on commission for Hetman Stanisław Mateusz Rzewuski (1662–1728). The essence of the issue addressed is an attempt to show the author’s individual artistic skills, an analysis of the semantics of the cycle’s construction, and the placement of this work in the context of genological research (emblems, stemma, impresa), especially with regard to reflections on the boundary between word and image. Krzywda bez szkody was, as can be assumed, developed on the basis of an existing graphic model. The figure of the typographer (Ignacy Herlacher) who probably contributed to the creation of the collection has been identified. In constructing his panegyric narrative, the author sometimes refers to the universal meaning of the image of a horseshoe outside the heraldic context. Attention was also drawn to the presence of conceptual mechanisms in the Jesuit’s cycle.
