Abstract

This article examines the literary memorising of Mary Stuart (1542–1587) in the works of Izabela Czartoryska and Maria Wirtemberska, juxtaposing the perspectives of mother and daughter on the same historical figure. The subject of reflection will be two texts by Czartoryska — Obraz Marii Stuart [Image of Mary Stuart] and Portret Marii Stuart [Portrait of Mary Stuart] — as well as a work by her daughter, Maria Wirtemberska — Niektóre szczegóły wyjęte z “Pamiętników” Marii Stuart. O jej dzieciństwie, pierwszej młodości i pobycie jej we Francji [Selected Details from Mary Stuart’s ‘Memoirs’: On Her Childhood, Early Youth, and Stay in France]. The discussion focuses on the scope and nature of intergenerational inheritancewithin both the thematic framework and the biographical form. The analysis demonstrates that interest in the Queen of Scots constitutes an inherited thematic legacy, while the manner of its literary development reveals Wirtemberska’s distinct narrative autonomy, shaped in dialogue with Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski’s reflections on biographical writing. The article argues that the genealogy of the theme and the genology of form operate in creative tension, providing a key to the interpretation of Wirtemberska’s narrative.
