Dekonstrukcja mitu historiograficznego. Rzecz o urodzie królowej Elżbiety Rakuszanki

Abstract

This article examines the historiographical myth surrounding the appearance of Queen Elisabeth of Austria (1436/1437–1505), traditionally portrayed in Polish historiography as visually unattractive and referred to as the ‘Mother of Kings’. While the latter title is indisputable, the former raises significant source-critical doubts. This text addresses the origins of Elizabeth’s alleged unattractiveness, questioning earlier studies, particularly those after 1972, which perpetuated this narrative without adequate source analysis. Using a critical analysis of historical texts and archaeological discoveries, the article reassesses the evidence supporting the queen’s alleged lack of beauty.

Niniejszy artykuł analizuje mit historiograficzny związany z wyglądem królowej Elżbiety Austriaczki (1436/1437–1505), tradycyjnie przedstawianej w polskiej historiografii jako nieatrakcyjna wizualnie i określanej mianem „matki królów”. O ile ten drugi tytuł jest niepodważalny, o tyle pierwszy budzi istotne wątpliwości źródłowo-krytyczne. Niniejszy tekst dotyczy źródeł rzekomej nieatrakcyjności Elżbiety, kwestionując wcześniejsze badania, zwłaszcza te po 1972 r., które utrwaliły tę narrację bez odpowiedniej analizy źródłoznawczej. Wykorzystując krytyczną analizę tekstów historycznych i odkryć archeologicznych, niniejszy artykuł ponownie ocenia dowody potwierdzające rzekomy brak urody królowej.
