Abstract

An image of Christians’ slave labor in the Ottoman Empire, presented in the 16th century translationof the Latin turcica entitled Rozmowa z Turczynem o wierze krześcijańskiej… (The dispute with a Turk overthe Christian faith…) by Bartłomiej Georgiewicz is probably the first in the Old Polish literature extensivedescription of the Turkish captivity aspect. This article analyzes Georgiewicz’s description and emphasizesits realism. It is also an attempt to defend the author against the accusation of stereotyping, raised againsthis writing in some contemporary Polish studies.
