Abstract

The essay deals with the problem of genre peculiarity of Isaak Babels book "Red Cavalry”. It consists of thirty-five very short stories and miniatures. In various books and articles on Babel this text is characterized as a collection o| novellas, a book of stories, a cycle oj stories, a tale and so on. However, in spite of its originality in form, the book is related to the tradition of the evolution of generic fictional forms in European and Russian literature. After the exploration of the main means of cyclisation as a way to the genre unity in "Red Cavalry”, the conclusionc an be deducedt hat the book in question is a novel in short stories.
