Abstract

In the nineteenth century the art of epistolary expression (especially for women) was highly appreciated in terms of maintaining social relationships. Initially, the noble art of writing letters was taught in schools. Gradually, this function has been taken over by the customary guides, which as products of mass consumption were present in almost every home at that time. This was largely due to the existing need in acquiring communication skills in writing as it was an essential skill in any part of daily life back then. Letters were used as a tool for job applications, they were also an indispensable part of trade relations. Moreover, letters often served as the only mean of nurturing and maintenance of family relations, friendship and love during longer separation of the closest ones. Although the general principles of the epistolary expression ought to apply to everyone, there were some constraints in this matter imposed on young women, especially unmarried ones. Their contact with real correspondence was predominantly achieved through their parents and carers who had read letters within the family circle or sent letters or greetings on behalf of all the household members. Despite the fact that there was a limited number of recipients to whom young ladies were allowed to send letters to, they were unformally obliged to get acquainted with and further learn by heart the general principles of correspondence. The knowledge of such kind gave them access to expand their social circle.
