Abstract

In the creation of a knowledge-based economy there is a full coexistence and symbiosis between globalization and the region. The economic and technological organization of the economy becomes a region gains particular importance in the processes of knowledge creation and innovation. Considerations presented here the regional (territorial) context of innovation present in the literature. They a ect the concept of innovation, learning regions, regional innovation systems and innovative clusters. They refer also to the systemic approach to innovation process, the paradigm of interactive learning, the proximity and resources — based view of economy. These considerations emphasize also that innovation processes are territorial, cultural and systemic in nature. Innovation is locally embedded process. In this context regions are considered not only as a physical space, but as a self-sustaining “machinery of knowledge.
