Abstract

The original meaning of the preposition and the prefix are assumed to have been the same. A close analysis of the semantic functions of the prefix and the preposition przy discloses certain common senses of these linguistic ele­ments. The semantic analogy can be seen in the following groups: 1) prefix przy- a) fixing things together, combining things, e.g. przycumować, przywiązać, przykleić b) performing some auxiliary action e.g. przytrzymać, przysiąść alf, przy- pośćlelić, i- preposition przy has a locative function e.g. zatrzask przy drzwiach, guziki przy kurtce, siedzieć przy stole, 2) prefix przy- an act accompanying some other action e.g. przybrząkać przy piszczeć, przy mruczeć, - preposition przy has an accessory function, e.g. tańczyć przy muzyce, wędrować przy pięknej pogodzie. The original function of the prefix przy- is assumed to be the directio­nal sense of "approaching sоmе point" e.g. przyjść, przybiec, przyjechać, przypłynąć. Such is the meaning of the prefix przy- when it is combined with verbs of movement. This semantic function of the prefix przy- is strictly de­ termined by the meaning of the morphological root. One might expect a similar meaning in the preposition przy. However, the preposition przy has never had such sense in the Polish language. The majority of the semantic functions of the preposition przy are dif­ ferent than in the case of the prefix przy-, although these functions have certainly evolved from a primary locative meaning. Virtually all functions of the preposition przy express some kind of proximity - spatial, temporal or an abstract one, determined by the lexical context in which it occurs and which it codetermlnes with the accompanying noun.
