Bankowość relacyjna jako czynnik determinujący rozwój sektora bankowości korporacyjnej w Polsce
Streszczenie
This document examines the key benefits of relationship banking services provided to both
large corporates as well as small and medium enterprises. Given the significant underpenetration
of corporate banking in Poland, compared to other Central and Eastern European and especially
Western European countries, the substantial growth of this sector is expected in the upcoming
years. Introduction or further development of relationship banking services is perceived as one
of the key factors, which may drive the future growth of corporate banking. According to recent
theories, as a bank provides more services to its customers, it creates a stronger relationship with
them and gains more confidential information about customer’s needs and capabilities. Both sides
can potentially benefit from such relationships. For instance, relationship banking can help banks
in monitoring the default risk of borrowers, providing a comparative advantage in lending. It can
also lower banks’ cost of information gathering over multiple products. Depending on the
competitiveness of the banking sector, such benefits to banks can lead to increased credit supply
to customers, through either greater quantities and/or lower prices of credit. On the other hand,
customers can benefit not only from lower probability of credit rationing but also lower price
of credit and quicker access to other banking services. This study implies that relationship banking
might be a key driver of future growth of corporate banking sector in Poland and further
comprehensive quantitative analysis shall be considered based on the examples in more developed
markets.
