<title>The Capacities and Limitations of the Newspaper Column as a Tool for Creating the Image of Its Author</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/11089/21400</link>
<description>The Capacities and Limitations of the Newspaper Column as a Tool for Creating the Image of Its Author
Barańska-Szmitko, Anna
The aim of this paper is to verify the capacities and limitations of the newspaper column (understood as a genre) as a tool for creating the image of its author. In the paper, the distinguishing features of a column are first presented, and then a hypothesis is proposed for predicting which attributes of its author may be generated by the column’s features. This hypothesis is juxtaposed with the results of empirical research. The main task of this research was to read the texts of one of two Polish columnists – Krzysztof Varga and Szymon Hołownia – and subsequently answer questions indicating the authors’ attributes. This procedure made it possible to recreate the image of the text’s author. The results demonstrated the influence of the column’s distinguishing features on the image of its author inferred by readers.

<description>Reportorial or Essayistic Paradigm? – a Few Remarks about the Sports Report
Siekiera, Rafał
The article attempts to decide whether the sports report is more about the information or the commentary. On the basis of an analysis of press material, the author examines different characteristics of the genre and tries to determine their compatibility with the news canon. As the analysis shows, the contemporary sports report is less about news and more about commentary, interpretation and evaluation. Journalists tend to summarize the competition and briefly describe the course of events. It makes the sports report similar to press comment and review.

<link>http://hdl.handle.net/11089/21398</link>
<description>The Rhetoric of Popular Science Texts. Scientific American Magazine as a Typical Example
Lichański, Jakub Z.
The aim of the study is to describe the relationship between rhetoric and popular science texts. Scientific American magazine is taken as an example. In conclusion, the author suggests that the rhetoric of popular science texts rests on the presentation of a problem, avoiding controversy in the presentation of research issues, avoiding modal forms and the use of multiple elements of visual rhetoric. This article contains brief historical information about the development of the magazine Scientific American.

<title>The Persuasiveness of a Message and the Problem of Legitimacy</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/11089/21396</link>
<description>The Persuasiveness of a Message and the Problem of Legitimacy
Leśniczak, Rafał
The author analyses several selected speeches of Italian politicians: the founder of the Forza Italia party, Silvio Berlusconi; the founder and leader of the Five Stars Movement, Beppe Grillo; and the current Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi. The study makes it possible to evaluate whether the conditions for the ideale Sprechsituation (the ideal speech situation) of Jürgen Habermas are fulfilled in analysing the public discourse. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between the persuasiveness of the communication and the problem of legitimacy.
