The author discusses selected problems connected with advisability of introducing the brigade -type organization of work in repair, teams in textile plants. He analyzes next problems concerning rationalization of labour division within brigades and collaboration of members of repair brigades. On the basis of optimization models of non-linear programming the author performs evaluation of interrelationships between labour productivity in repair brigades and indices of labour division and size of brigades. The article ends with a review of the methods of dividing wages in brigades and the criteria of evaluating an index of labour input as a basis for internal division of wages in brigades.

The fixing of wages in the European socialist countries continues to be a bureaucratic process based on the dominant role of the "paternalistic" state. Faced with the latest economic, social and political problems this mechanism displays symptoms of crisis. Attempts made to ensure its greater elasticity have not changed its very essence. A real alternative seems to be a three-sided agreement (government, trade unions, employers) based on the market of labour and broad autonomy of enterprises.

The main emphasis in this article has been placed on factors determining motivation by means of wages in enterprises on the example of chosen socialist countries (Yugoslavia, Hungary, Poland, GOR and USSR). These factors were considered to include: a country ’s socio - economic tasks, which should be aided by wages, environment in relation to wages (socio-economic conditions) employees ’ goals and expectations , and agreement between the wage system and other motivation instruments. The main part of deliberations deals with objectives of wage systems in their relationship with directions of economic reforms, and directions of wage system rebuilding in socialist countries.

The article outlines some problems connected with pay in foreign trade enterprises. The analysis of general characteristics of the situatIon in Poland ’s foreign trade and progress made in introducing systemic solutions of the economic reform in foreign trade was a basis for formulating certain conclusions concerning directions of changes in the wage system in the light of new legal regulations regarding economic activity (which came into force as from January 1st, 1989). The problems of pay outlined in the article will be an object of further studies.
